We have a selection of some of the most creepiest abandoned places around the world, every single one of which has its own special charm. Beneath all the dust, rust and cracks, there are stories of people who used to live, pray, or take their daily train rides there, and when you try to imagine these people and their lives, each picture gets a special aura of nostalgia. It’s as if the people in these places just picked up and left.

On the other hand, it’s also fascinating to see how some things that used to belong to people are slowly being reclaimed by nature again. Have a look at at the places below.

The Sunken Yacht, Antarctica

The south-most continent of the planet Earth – Antarctica is an ice-covered landmass located at the South Pole. The place which is virtually uninhabited has this spooky looking ship called The Mar Sem Fim frozen beneath. A Brazilian Yacht that was wrecked near Ardley Cove in Antarctica and now terrifies us by just looking at its picture.

I.M. Cooling Tower, Old Power Station – Belgium

These are worn out parts of a cooling tower in an old power station in Monceau, Belgium. The magnificent trumpet-like structure in the middle introduced hot water to the structure, followed by a cooling effect while dripping down hundreds of small concrete troughs and slats

The Maunsell Sea Forts – England

These magnificent forts were supposedly erected near the Thames and Mersey rivers in Britain to provide protection against German air or naval raids during World War II.

Kolmanskop, Namibia

Kolmanskop was a small settlement in Namibia that saw a boom in the early 1900s when German settlers realized that the area was rich in diamonds. The surge of wealth gave out after WWI, however, when the diamond field began to deplete. By the 1950s, the town was completely deserted, and is now visited by photographers and tourists.

102-Year-Old Floating Forest in Sydney, Australia

This is the hull of the SS Ayrfield, a large steam ship condemned to dismantling in Homebush Bay, Australia after WWII. When the dismantling yard closed down, however, it and several other ships remained where they were. Now, it is a beautiful and haunting floating forest that serves as an example of nature’s capacity for survival.

The Last House on Holland Island, USA

This house was what was the last of the remains of Holland Island before it too collapsed in 2010.

Pripyat – Ukraine

The city of Pripyat was established in Ukraine, close to the border of Belarus on Feb. 4th 1970 as a Soviet nuclear city. It was a residential to the workers who worked in the nearby Chernobyl nuclear power plant. But in 1986, the nuclear power plant faced a disaster, more popularly known as the Chernobyl Disaster of 1986, which led to the evacuation of the entire city. Priypat, thus, remains a radioactive ghost city haunted by the nightmares of that dreadful night.

Chateau Miranda, Belgium

This castle was built with an intention of hiding by French aristocrats who were trying to escape the revolution. Because of its past, this haunting castle remains a favorite ghost hunting destination among people who visit it.

House of the Bulgarian Communist Party, Bulgaria

The former headquarters of Bulgaria’s Communist Party has an eerie feel to it. The building is shaped like a flying saucer and was probably an architecture marvel when it was in use from 1981 until 1991. But it went silent and deserted after the fall of the Soviet Union. It is now a ghost of its former self, putting people who visit it in a trance.

Ross Island — Andaman and Nicobar Islands, India

The site of the former administrative headquarters for the British in the Andaman Islands during British rule over India, Ross Island is currently home to numerous ruins enveloped by various vines and branches. The island was abandoned in the 1940s because of earthquakes as well as a Japanese invasion during the war.

Abandoned Military Hospital in Beelitz – Germany

These completely spooky pictures are what is left of the abandoned Beelitz-Heilstätten hospital in Beelitz, Germany. The complex was built sometime around the late 1800s. It had also helped AdolfHitler recover from a leg wound that he incurred at the Battle of Somme fought in 1916. However, some parts of the complex are in operation till date, but most of them were abandoned shortly after the Soviets left the hospital in 1995.

Underwater City in Shicheng – China

This amazing city trapped underwater is 1341 years old and known by the name of Shicheng, or Lion City. It is located in the Zhejiang province in eastern China. In 1959, while the construction of the Xin’an River Hydropower Station was underway, this city, suddenly submerged completely underwater. The water has been protecting the city from wind and rain erosion, so it has remained untouched by nature’s wrath and remains in a fairly impressive condition.
