For the past two years, the edtech industry has been one of the areas in the country's startup ecosystem that has had one of the highest rates of growth. Students flocked to these edtech firms as a direct result of the stay-at-home rules that were implemented during the epidemic. This resulted in schools, colleges, and tuition centres closing their doors.

The boost that the epidemic offered to the sector was also reflected in the compensation of senior executives of these businesses. In FY21, the founders of the most prominent edtech startups earned a combined total of more than INR 420 Cr in gross remuneration.

While Divya Gokulnath, cofounder of BYJU, was at the top of the list and Gaurav Munjal, cofounder of Unacademy, was in second place.

While Sumeet Mehta and Smita Deorah, the founders of LEAD, each got a gross income of INR 1.07 Cr in FY21, Alakh Pandey, the creator of PhysicsWallah, brought home a salary of INR 75 Lakh throughout the course of the year. PhysicsWallah is a newly-turned unicorn.
